Condor Facts
*Yes, they are vultures, but condor sounds nicer.
*California Condors are among nature’s sanitation
workers. That means they eat a lot of carrion—
a pleasant word
for dead animals.
*The California Condor is found only in western North America, specifically
in and around the
Grand Canyon, Zion National Park, California’s Central
Coast mountains and the northern reaches
of Baja California.
*Only 322 Condors are known to exist. It’s estimated that 172 are in
the wild.
*Condors live up to 50 years.
*Unlike most birds of prey, the female condor is smaller than the male.
*Average adults weigh around 20 pounds and have a wingspan of nine feet.
*Santa Barbara zoo personnel drove through a snowstorm to bring their
new condors home from the World Center for Birds of Prey in Boise, Idaho.
