MY Children’s Museum

The new improved MY Museum (Monterey County
Youth Museum) offers hours of fun for the young and young-at-heart. This is every kid’s dream—a chance
to drive an ambulance, climb aboard a fire engine, hop
on a tractor and even “make rain.” There are lots of
other options for make-believe and a craft area where creativity goes wild. Parents should plan to spend at
least half a day in this educational play world.

The Museum is located at 425 Washington Street in
down-town Monterey. It is open Monday through Tuesday and Thursday through Saturday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sundays from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. It is closed Wednesdays. Admission for all adults and children over the age of
two is $7.

MY Museum Lighthouse: Kelli Udall

MY Museum Lighthouse. Teaches children about light, prisms and other scientific concepts in a fun and engaging way.

Dennis the Menace Park
Designed by Hank Ketchum, the creator of the beloved Dennis of funny paper, TV and movie fame, this park is sure-fire fun. Even the busiest boys and girls will burn off energy exploring the old steam locomotive, scrambling through the maze and careening down an amazing collection of slides.

Monterey Maritime and History Museum
Exhibits and artifacts take visitors on a walk through the centuries. They present stories of indigenous Rumsien/Ohlone tribes, Spanish explorers and missionaries and Mexican and American settlers. Throughout all the changes, the community’s relationship with the sea remained constant. There is no admission charge. The museum is located across from Fisherman’s Wharf in downtown Monterey.
It is open Tuesday through Sunday from 10 a.m.

Salinas:
Steinbeck Center and More

Just 20 miles from Cannery Row, Salinas—the
legendary novelist John Steinbeck’s hometown—is
the place for tapping into the region’s rich agricultural history. Enjoy lunch at the Steinbeck House—the author’s birthplace and boyhood
home—a stately Victorian listed on the register
of historic places.

Tours are offered every Sunday from June through September. Nearby, The National Steinbeck Center,
1 Main Street, animates Steinbeck’s characters and writings for the non-reader, as well as lovers of literature, through film clips, themed theaters and interactive exhibits. Of special interest is the annual Steinbeck Festival held August 6 through 9 this year.

Salinas Valley in a permanent exhibit titled From Field
to Fork. Its colorful displays detail the evolution of
agri-business and the area’s important role in the industry’s global development. It may inspire you
to get up close and personal with the surrounding
farms and fields. If so, Ag Venture Tours offer a selection of Valley of the World expeditions ranging from treks in the artichoke fields to forays into the miles of micro-greens gracing this verdant environment.
